And, there’s a good reason for that…

95% of UIUC computer science majors had an internship or co-op during their degree program. Additionally, the average salary of full-time comp sci graduates was $136,542.

And that’s all well and good. Students looking to make a great career for themselves just need to apply to a top school like UIUC, get accepted, and make a good living for themselves…

…right?

Well, it’s not that easy.

UIUC’s Grainger College of Engineering alone has an acceptance rate of 21.2%. But, for computer science, it’s even more daunting. As of 2025, UIUC had an acceptance rate of 7.4% for students applying to computer science.

So what now? With admissions rates as low as single digits, strong grades and high test scores are not enough to guarantee acceptance into UIUC for engineering. You’ll need strong essays to truly maximize your chances of acceptance.

How to Write the UIUC Engineering Essays

1. Be Concise. Don’t Waste Space.

Because UIUC’s essay prompts are limited to 150 words, you’ll have to be concise. Write briefly. But, be sweet.

A cool trick you can do with short essay questions like this is to think like an entrepreneur. Specifically, imagine that you’re a business person pitching an idea to an investor. You only have a few sentences to leave a good impression. What would you focus on?

Chances are, you’re not focusing on the little details of how your business works. Instead, you’re focusing on the things they care about.

For instance:

• Question: “Why would I invest in your business?”
• Answer: “No one makes paper that leaves a good impression on business people. Paper is just paper. But, not us. We’re the first to do this. If you’re investing in us, you’ll be one of the first to hop on this new industry full of potential for growth.”

This isn’t perfect, of course, but it’s an example in principle. Similarly, think of how you’d make a “pitch” to UIUC as if you were a business person rather than a student.

We’ll use UIUC’s second prompt as an example:

• Describe your personal and/or career goals after graduating from Illinois and how your selected first-choice major will help you achieve them. (150 words)
• “AI is changing everything, that’s unmistakable. People are losing their livelihood over it, too. But, no one is having that conversation. I want to develop tools that aren’t just focused on growth. I want to create things that will protect others from the inexorable dangers that come with AI too. We have too much focus on how to profit from AI and not enough on protection. If I can develop tools of protection, that would make UIUC worth it.”

You can use this business pitch strategy for any kind of short-form essay prompts you get from other schools too. The key is to get right to the “meat and potatoes” of what you need to talk about.

You’ll soon realize you can cut out more than you originally expected.

2. Use the Blue Ocean Strategy.

Similarly to the first point, you can use business strategies to write very strong college essays.

In this case, we’re going to be using the Blue Ocean strategy. Blue Ocean is a strategy where business people move from a more competitive industry to a less competitive one. Think of a “blue ocean” where everything is isolated, like the middle of the ocean. There’s no one fishing except for you.

If you’re going to get accepted into a top school for a competitive program like UIUC engineering, then Blue Ocean thinking is crucial. You need to differentiate your topic in a manner such that you box out the competition.

For instance:

You might be interested in engineering have some experience in robotics. But, there are plenty of other people who are also robotics students. You won’t be competitive enough because this niche isn’t narrow enough.

Instead, let’s say that you’re not ONLY interested in robotics. But, you’re also in the cosplay and clothing design community. You’ve created robot designs and products for friends who are in the cosplay community, and their works are shown in events like Anime Expo and Comic Con. This publicity has helped you gain a small number of followers who are also cosplayers. And, they occasionally commission you for new desgins.

Does cosplay have anything to do with robotics? Well, not really. A little bit; but, not a lot. Nonetheless, this is a very real development and completely doable. In fact, something like this would be a great addition to help admissions officers see that you’re different from the rest of the competition. And, for UIUC engineering, that’s absolutely crucial.

3. Show Admissions Officers That You Have a Plan.

Is it wrong to tell admissions officers that you don’t know what to do in the future?

No.

It’s understandable, in fact. After all, admissions officers recognize not every student is going to have a narrow and streamlined path. College is for exploring this path, any way.

However, with admissions rates being this low for UIUC engineering, it’s especially useful to show your readers that you at least have a plan.

It’s okay to tell your readers you ultimately don’t know what your goal is. However, your UIUC engineering essay is most impressive when you have, at a minimum, some semblance of a plan to follow.

It’s the initiative to have conjured a plan for the future that counts. Anyone can say they don’t know what they want for the future. But, the difference is in whether you take action to create a plan for it or not. There’s nothing more unimpressive than being lackadaisical and not bothering to plan for the future.

4. Don’t Just Think of Yourself. Think of How You Might Help Others.

This is not required. However, it’s a good way to add some good brownie points to your essay!

If you have a moral stance in your UIUC engineering essay, it can give admissions officers a stronger reason to accept you. And, what better moral stance than to say you can help others using your knowledge?

Remember: a lot of students are going into engineering to pursue good job security and income. It’s self-centered (understandably.) However, this also means many are not thinking about the positive ramifications of their work on the world.

You want to capitalize off of this.

When you’re one of the few students who have an empathic and moralistic stance on the benefit your engineering perspective goals have on the world, admissions officers are given significantly more reasons to grant you space into their school.

After all, they’re also thinking of who would most be a great “fit” for their school. And, an altruistic slant can work wonderfully in this case.

“In my Robotics team, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work on a drone worth tens of thousands of dollars. It was specifically designed to help with detecting emergencies in high-risk areas and quickly deploy aid. While it sounded simple enough to replace certain parts such as aluminum frames for lightweight transportation, doing the calculus to ensure every working part functioned as a body was certainly a challenge.  

One of the most interesting things that stood out to me is just how important open communication is to not just robotics but project management in general. Given my first-choice major of computer engineering, I’ve a newfound appreciation for middle management and its responsibility of delegating tasks to respective departments. Working on the drone has ultimately made me far more appreciative of every cog in the machine, even those outside computer engineering.”
